Welcoming the Widecabs to Hell Gate

Welcoming the Widecabs to Hell Gate

This was the first trip in August of 2009 of an SD60M (and first CSX widecab) on Hell Gate Bridge. The train is exiting the west arch onto Randalls Island, returning from the interchange with New York & Atlantic Railway on Long Island.

The Hell Gate Bridge opened to traffic on September 30, 1916, and was built to connect the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road with New England via the New Haven Railroad.

The bridge and all 3 tracks are maintained by Amtrak.
CSX and Providence & Worcester use the bridge as well.
Canadian Pacific last used the bridge on December 13, 2010.

The honor of first widecab on Hell Gate Bridge goes to Canadian Pacific 8638 on 12/4/2001.

The 8767 was one of a few SD60M's still in YN2 paint.
8760, 8763, 8767. It was the last one out of the three to get painted.
